Adriana is the Responsible Seafood Strategy Director for Iberostar Hotels’ Wave of Change. In this role, she developed their Responsible Seafood Commitment and strategy to achieve 100% responsible seafood consumption in all Iberostar hotels by 2025.

She works closely with Iberostar’s purchasing team and their vendors to collect data on all seafood procurement and support improving sourcing. Adriana started her career in the seafood industry working at the family business, Sea Delight, one of GSSI first funding members, and later joined Fair Trade USA as their Business Development Manager for their seafood program.

Alf-Gøran was born in Kristiandsand, Norway. He has been salmon farming since 2005 and leading as CEO of Kvaroy Group since 2008. Kvaroy is a third generation, family owned company located just above the Arctic Circle in Norway. The company holds 5 licenses to produce salmon which allows Kvaroy to produce 8,000 tons of salmon a year. Alf-Gøran is also a member of the board for a number of companies in aquaculture and technology. Alf-Gøran is a former economics teacher and holds a degree in business and marketing. Alf-Gøran and his wife, Ida Knutsen, have three kids.

Andrea Weber started her career as a lawyer before she joined METRO in 2003. METRO is a leading international wholesale and food service distribution specialist. Andrea held different leading positions in the company, always connected to the area of environment and sustainability. As Director Corporate Responsibility, she is the single point of contact for METRO’s country operations in all matters of sustainability and assures the development and fostering of external partnerships.  She is an expert in responsible sourcing, with special focus on fish and seafood sourcing.

Andrea is chair of the Steering Board of the Global Tuna Alliance (GTA), a partnership working towards traceable, socially and environmentally responsible tuna as well as a member of the Steering Board of the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI), a global platform and partnership working towards more sustainable seafood. I have over 30 years of the fine dining experience and understand the importance of quality in all aspects of fine dining from sourcing ingredients and mentorship in my kitchen to placing the finished dish on the plate.

A chef has an obligation to honor the ingredients in a dish. As my career has progressed, I have learned honoring the ingredients includes more than the formulation of a dish but also in the origin and care of the product before it ever enters my kitchen. Thus I have grown to develop a hauntingly spiritual obligation to source sustainable ingredients and center them in my cooking.

I am passionate about sustainable seafood in particular because of my awe at the ocean. The ocean inspires me as a chef, challenges me as an athlete, and brings me joy as a person. I want to support the ocean and its ecosystems in my cooking. As an artist and a father promoting and creating relationships with suppliers that foster the future is my priority, from the smallest producers to the largest.

He has worked with international organisations, governments, major seafood buyers and supply chain companies, but Anton is most passionate about the long-term involvement of smallholder farmers in value chains.

He wants to find solutions for farmers and regulators to address the many challenges that aquaculture continues to face as the sector grows, including environmental management at farm and resource level, coordinated health control, sustainable and quality inputs, better use of data, and equitable access to innovation.

Beth Walton has spent her career in different aspects of the seafood world. A marine biologist and former oyster farmer, she has managed shellfish hatcheries, and taught students of all ages about the importance of sustainability and coastal conservation. Beth is now the Executive Director of Oyster South, a 501 (c) (3) non- profit whose mission is to connect communities and to provide resources to foster the success of oyster farming in the southern United States. We are an all-inclusive support system for the southern shellfish farming community. We work with shellfish farmers from North Carolina, south to Florida, and west to Texas as well as chefs, wholesalers, media, students, scientists, gear suppliers, and anyone who supports southern oyster farming.

Since receiving his degree in shellfish biology from the University of Washington in 1981 Bill Dewey has worked as a shellfish farmer in Washington State.  He is Director of Public Affairs for Taylor Shellfish Farms, the largest producer of farmed shellfish in the United States and he has owned and operated his own shellfish farm in Samish Bay for 25 years.

Mr. Dewey works on environmental, human health, aquaculture and regulatory policy issues at the local, state and federal levels on behalf of Taylor Shellfish and the broader shellfish industry. He serves on a number of boards and committees locally and nationally including the Board of Directors of the National Aquaculture Association and the Pacific Shellfish Institute.  He has served on the Puget Sound Partnership’s Ecosystem Coordination Board since its inception in 2007 and co-chairs the Washington Department of Ecology’s Ag Water Quality Advisory Committee with Director Laura Watson.  He served on Washington State’s Ocean Acidification Blue Ribbon Panel in 2011 and currently serves on the Washington Marine Resources Advisory Council (MRAC) advising Washington’s Governor and Legislature on the state’s response to ocean acidification.

Bob Rheault started a small shellfish hatchery while he was working on his PhD at URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography. He trademarked the Moonstone Oysters brand and established a marketing cooperative to distribute locally-farmed oysters nationwide. He sold his farm in 2007 now serves as the Executive Director of the East Coast Shellfish Growers Association. He has served on NOAA’s Marine Fisheries Advisory Council and now sits on NOAA’s Science Advisory Board. His research  interests include documenting and evaluating the environmental services provided by shellfish aquaculture and using nutrient credit trading as a means to mitigate coastal eutrophication. He is a passionate advocate for the shellfish farming community.

Conservation and sustainability are more than a job for Brett; it’s a way of life. To make a meaningful impact, Brett believes ecology and economies need to be considered together. The ocean conservation and sustainable seafood community understands this so Brett feels right at home here, despite being a vegetarian.

Prior to FishChoice, Brett ran his own consulting business, Digital Timber, which was designed specifically to bring practical technology tools to conservation work. His recent work has focused on Southeast Asia where he has supported the development of the Asian Seafood Improvement Collaborative, a group of seafood industry stakeholders working to build their own fisheries and shrimp aquaculture improvement programs. In addition, Postelsia is working to develop an innovative restaurant sustainability program that builds upon its work with the James Beard Foundation’s Smart Catch program, for which Corey was the Sustainability Director. Corey has experience working on seafood sustainability assessments and standards. He also leads multi-stakeholder initiatives and helps buyers understand sustainability issues and meet their sustainability commitments. He has worked with Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch, the Raincoast Conservation Society, Fish 2.0, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the James Beard Foundation, and the David Suzuki Foundation, among others. Over the last decade, Erick has been serving as a key executive in the aquaculture industry, under the triple helix of academia, government and industry, where he has had the full scope of the aquaculture activity and has a broad vision of the opportunities to keep developing aquaculture in the Americas.

Erick was commercial manager for Baja Seas, coordinating post-harvest operations and introducing its Hiramasa (Seriola lalandi) to both Mexico and the US markets. Has been a professor of Agribusiness Development in the undergraduate program of Aquaculture Biotechnology.

Erick served as Director of Aquaculture in the State Government of Baja California, with responsibilities for governance, public policy, representation and promotion of the industry, and with full responsibility for managing and granting public funds to develop aquaculture in Baja California. He was Chief Financial Officer for Kampachi Farms (Seriola rivoliana), before moving over to Baja Shellfish Farms as CFO, where he is currently assuming full admin responsibility.

Eva Mudde is involved in the coordination and development of programmes implementing sustainable change across the global seafood sector. She spearheaded the development of Seafood MAP and coordinated the work of the GSSI Seafood MAP partner taskforce. Eva also maintained the relations with GSSI’s affiliated partners.

Eva conducted a research project with the UN FAO on the FAO-GSSI partnership, identifying key achievements of the partnership; and potential future collaborations to work towards more sustainable seafood for everyone.

Eva holds an MSc degree in Marine Biology from Wageningen University, the Netherlands.

As Aqua-Spark’s Director of Partnerships, he is responsible for driving the development and execution of a robust partner ecosystem that aligns all stakeholders behind a core vision, while supporting Aqua-Spark’s portfolio, network, and goals.

Prior to joining Aqua-Spark, Flavio worked for IDH, the Sustainable Trade Initiative, overseeing their Aquaculture Program. He was also IDH Vietnam Country Director, establishing groundbreaking public-private partnerships in coffee, tea, and apparel. He founded and ran the sustainability arm of the Vietnam association of farmers and fishers (VINAFIS). He has worked as an expert for over 20 international organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Flavio holds an M.Sc. in Aquaculture from the University of Stirling and a Ph.D. in Epidemiology, the study of diseases in populations, from the University of Liverpool.

Becoming a father helped him shift his lens towards generational thinking and the necessity of designing system solutions better  suited for future generations. Ian first got interested in marine sciences after years of watching Jacques Cousteau on TV and reading all of his books. In 1974, Ian and his family found Penn Cove in the Puget Sound and started Penn Cove mussel farm in 1975 making it the first mussel farm on the west coast of North America.

Ian graduated Western Washington University in 1981 with a BS in Marine Resource Planning and Assessment. In 1986, after farming and working around the world in environmental and marine consulting, Ian bought the mussel farm from the family. Since then, the farm has expanded from six full time employees to over eighty.

In March of 1996, Penn Cove Mussels, Inc. entered a joint venture with the Coast Seafoods Company to form a joint venture, Penn Cove Shellfish, LLC. In 2016, Ian and Penn Cove began farming clams and oysters in addition to mussels.

With Hog Island, John used his experience in European aquaculture to pioneer a customer perception shift of Pacific oysters. Prevailing wisdom at the time saw Pacific oysters destined for jars, with Atlantic oysters reserved for raw consumption by the half shell. After having worked for three years, he convinced and proved success in shrimp farming to the local farmers and officials of the Department of Fisheries, Government of Gujarat by practically demonstrating shrimp culture.

His hard and dedicated work has transformed the coastal waste land into the most viable shrimp farming business providing livelihood to thousands of people in Surat district of Gujarat. Having seen successful results, Government of Gujarat allotted large extent of brackish water land close to 5000 ha to the farmers. To sustain the success he also initiated group farming and educated them the importance of Good Management Practices (GMP). Thus, the shrimp farmers came together to form Surat Aqua Farmers’ Association (SAFA), which is today one of the most successful shrimp farming association in the country. Based on his achievements and practical experience, he was inducted Member, Subcommittee, Fisheries, 12th planning commission, Govt. of India.

He has also started the first concept of satellite shrimp farming in Gujarat to get the final products from the shrimp farmers. He is the first person in the country to advocate low stocking module for L. vannamei and now based on this module “Farming vannamei the tiger way” is the most successful concept not only in India but also many other shrimp farming countries. He has motivated many shrimp farmers to take up sustainable model of shrimp farming. During his career he has also guided Ukai fishermen in India for successful cage fish farming.

He has worked in more than 60 countries assessing and auditing quality, food safety, traceability, labor conditions, and sustainability matters. It is part of the FIA PNG board strategic group. Mark Drew is a life-long conservationist with over 25 years of experience working in Asia, Oceania, the eastern Caribbean and mainland, United States and has included working across a wide range of conservation initiatives including areas of conservation, policy and government relations, to developing and implementing strategic programs.

Central to all of Mark’s work has been a focus on building successful collaborations involving representation from the public, private, and NGO sectors to advance the needs of people, the environment and economic development and Mark has several years of direct experiences working in the eastern Caribbean, Polynesian and Micronesian islands. Mark is currently the Director for WWF-Pacific and leads the Fiji, PNG and Solomon Islands offices. In his capacity as Director, Mark is responsible for strategic implementation of all programs of work throughout the Pacific Program.

Prior to his current role, Mark held and led extensive positions such as Lead for WWF’s Resilient Asian Deltas to Conservation Program Director for WWF-Cambodia, his last position before joining WWF Pacific. Preceding working in Cambodia, Mark spent a decade directing a freshwater and fisheries program in California with an emphasis on ensuring freshwater security.

In Mark’s earlier career, he spent several years in eastern Caribbean leading marine and terrestrial protected areas work for The Nature Conservancy, as well as having conducted research in the Asia Pacific on coastal aquaculture, coastal wetlands and documenting the socio-economic importance of agroforestry systems and fisheries in Small Island Developing States. Mark holds a B.S. degree in stry and Natural Resources Management, an M.A. degree in International Development Policy and a Doctorate degree in Forestry and Resource Conservation from the University of Florida.

Michael has been advancing open ocean farming technologies for over 25 years in the US and Abroad. In the US, he has managed submerged cage culture projects in the Gulf of Mexico, Hawaii and the North Atlantic. In 2000, he took the role as Project Manager at the University of New Hampshire’s (UNH) Open Ocean Aquaculture Project and the Atlantic Marine Aquaculture Center. This project was on the forefront of developing biological, engineering, and environmental technologies for the commercialization of offshore aquaculture in the US. Numerous marine culture systems were deployed, and numerous species were successfully cultured at the demonstration farm located 13 km offshore in 52m water depth. In addition, he has been training fishermen and farmers on small scale, integrated multi-trophic aquaculture of steelhead trout, blue mussels, and sugar kelp on floating platforms. More recently and funded by the Department of Energy, Michael’s been involved with multiple US institutions to develop offshore macroalgae farms for biofuel production. Internationally, Michael has engaged aquaculture projects in the Black Sea (US AID), in Norway (SINTEF Oceans and NTNU), in the Mediterranean (University and private), New Zealand (Cawthron Institute), and Cuba (federal and non-profit). Michael received a BS (Biology) from the University of Wisconsin, a MS (Mariculture) from Texas A&M and a Ph.D. (Zoology) from the University of New Hampshire. Dr. Thierry Chopin was born and educated in France. He obtained his Doctorate from the University of Western Brittany, Brest, France. He moved to Canada in 1989 and is presently Professor of Marine Biology at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John. Rita Robert Otu is an agricultural economist specializing in gender, development, and women’s rights. She is a youth leader and social entrepreneur from Nigeria eager to deliver high-impact food system solutions. After gaining her Master’s degree from the University of Manchester United Kingdom, she returned to Nigeria and founded Beau Haven Farms, a nonprofit organization that creates food awareness on food security.

As a form girl, Rita understands the need to promote and create awareness of the agricultural sector to engage with future generations. She uses her creativity and passion for agriculture through her storytelling initiative called Ekongke. There she celebrates Nigerian agriculture through unique photos of women farmers, starting meaningful conversations around food and fiber production. This will strengthen rural communities by enabling a new generation to access opportunities across primary industries and provide an ongoing connection for the older generation of farmers as they transition out of hands-on agriculture.

Laura is the co-founder and Executive Director of “The Lexicon.” A social entrepreneur deeply rooted in the environmental movement, she founded Laloo’s, the first goat’s milk ice cream in the United States, a company based on principles informed by food science, water stewardship, animal welfare, and the good food movement. Named a top 10 tastemaker by Newsweek, she continues to advise food companies after a successful exit from ice cream. Prior to Laloo’s, Laura worked in television. She founded Slo.Graffiti, a subsidiary of a Palomar Pictures consumer products branding company, owns one technical patent for Tunnelvision, a proprietary storytelling system for subway systems. Laura is a graduate of Miami University, where she rode for the Equestrian team, and still rides when she isn’t gardening, composting, or pickling something from the farm she shares with her partner Douglas Gayeton. She serves on several nonprofit boards, including Womenserve NGO, which is dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls in Rajasthan, India, and Petaluma Bounty, a community farm. The Lexicon™ is a California-based nonprofit founded in 2009 with a focus on positive solutions for a more sustainable planet.

For the past five years, it has developed an “activator for good ideas” with support from Food at Google. This model gathers domain experts from over 1,000 companies and organizations working at the intersection of food, agriculture, conservation, and climate change.

Together, the community has reached consensus on strategies that respond to challenges across multiple domain areas, including biodiversity, regenerative agriculture, food packaging, aquaculture, and the missing middle in supply chains for meat.

Lexicon of Food is the first public release of that work.

Welcome to the “FOOD CHOICES FOR A HEALTHY PLANET” game!

This game was designed to raise awareness about the impacts our food choices have on our own health, but also the environment, climate change and the cultures in which we live.

First, you can choose one of the four global regions and pick a character that you want to play.

Each region has distinct cultural, economic, historical, and agricultural capacities to feed itself, and each character faces different challenges, such as varied access to food, higher or lower family income, and food literacy. 

As you take your character through their day, select the choices you think they might make given their situation. 

At the end of the day you will get a report on the impact of your food choices on five areas: health, healthcare, climate, environment and culture. Take some time to read through them. Now go back and try again. Can you make improvements in all five areas? Did one area score higher, but another score lower? 

FOOD CHOICES FOR A HEALTHY PLANET will help you better understand how all these regions and characters’ particularities can influence our food choices, and how our food choices can impact our personal health, national healthcare, environment, climate, and culture. Let’s Play!

The FOOD CHOICES FOR A HEALTHY PLANET game allows users to experience the dramatic connections between food and climate in a unique and engaging way. The venue and the game set-up provides attendees with a fun experience, with a potential to add a new layer of storytelling about this topic.

Starting the game: the pilot version of the game features four country/regions: Each reflects a different way people (and the national dietary guidelines) look at diets: Nordic Countries (sustainability), Brazil (local and whole foods instead of ultra-processed foods); Canada (plant-forward), and Indonesia (developing countries).

Personalizing the game: players begin by choosing a country and then a character who they help in making food choices over the course of one day. Later versions may allow for creating custom avatars.

Making tough food choices: This interactive game for all ages shows how the food choices we make impact our health and the environment, and even contribute to climate change.

Our harvests are immediately frozen with ice flakes in layers in cool boxes. Boxes are equipped with paper records and coding for traceability. We ensure that our harvests are processed with the utmost care at <-18 degrees Celsius.

Deforestation Free

Sourcing plant based ingredients, like soy, from producers that do not destroy forests to increase their growing area and produce fish feed ingredients

With adjacent locations to mangroves and coastal areas, our farmers and company are committed to no deforestation at any scale. Mangrove rehabilitation and replantation are conducted every year in collaboration with local authorities. Our farms are not established in protected habitats and have not resulted from deforestation activity since the beginning of our establishment.

Our black tiger shrimps are not fed using commercial feed. The system is zero input and depends fully on natural feed grown in the pond. Our farmers use organic fertilizer and probiotics to enhance the water quality.

As our practices are natural, organic, and zero input, farms coexist with surrounding biodiversity which increases the volume of polyculture and mangrove coverage area. Farmers’ groups, along with the company, conduct regular benthic assessments, river cleaning, and mangrove planting.

THE TERM “MOONSHOT” IS OFTEN USED TO DESCRIBE an initiative that goes beyond the confines of the present by transforming our greatest aspirations into reality, but the story of a moonshot isn’t that of a single rocket. In fact, the Apollo program that put Neil Armstrong on the moon was actually preceded by the Gemini program, which in a two-year span rapidly put ten rockets into space. This “accelerated” process — with a new mission nearly every 2-3 months — allowed NASA to rapidly iterate, validate their findings and learn from their mistakes. Telemetry. Propulsion. Re-entry. Each mission helped NASA build and test a new piece of the puzzle.

The program also had its fair share of creative challenges, especially at the outset, as the urgency of the task at hand required that the roadmap for getting to the moon be written in parallel with the rapid pace of Gemini missions. Through it all, the NASA teams never lost sight of their ultimate goal, and the teams finally aligned on their shared responsibilities. Within three years of Gemini’s conclusion, a man did walk on the moon.

FACT is a food systems solutions activator that assesses the current food landscape, engages with key influencers, identifies trends, surveys innovative work and creates greater visibility for ideas and practices with the potential to shift key food and agricultural paradigms.

Each activator focuses on a single moonshot; instead of producing white papers, policy briefs or peer-reviewed articles, these teams design and implement blueprints for action. At the end of each activator, their work is released to the public and open-sourced.

As with any rapid iteration process, many of our activators re-assess their initial plans and pivot to address new challenges along the way. Still, one thing has remained constant: their conviction that by working together and pooling their knowledge and resources, they can create a multiplier effect to more rapidly activate change.

A Greener Blue Global Storytelling Initiative is sponsored by The Lexicon, a US based 501(c)(3) public charity.

Opportunity

Storytellers will join A Greener Blue Storytelling Collective to create stories for the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture with the FAO and its partner organizations. Members of the Collective will take part in a private online “Total Storytelling Lab” led by The Lexicon’s Douglas Gayeton. Upon completion of this online certificate program, members of the Collective will join seafood experts from around the globe in creating A Greener Blue Storytelling initiative.

Terms

Who can enter and how selections are made.

A Greener Blue is a global call to action that is open to individuals and teams from all over the world. Below is a non-exhaustive list of subjects the initiative targets.

  • Creatives and storytellers with a passion for food and the willingness to support small-scale fisherpeople and experts worldwide. This category includes, but is not exhausted in photographers, videomakers, illustrators, podcasters, and writers.
  • Food Activists working to change open sea fishing and aquaculture; 
  • Members of fishing and indigenous communities that support their communities, share their stories and protect their way of life;
  • Local and International NGOs work every day with actors across the whole value chain to create more sustainable seafood models.

To apply, prospective participants will need to fill out the form on the website, by filling out each part of it. Applications left incomplete or containing information that is not complete enough will receive a low score and have less chance of being admitted to the storytelling lab.

Nonprofit organizations, communities of fishers and fish farmers and companies that are seeking a closer partnership or special support can also apply by contacting hello@thelexicon.org and interacting with the members of our team.

Special attention will be given to the section of the form regarding the stories that the applicants want to tell and the reasons for participating. All proposals for stories regarding small-scale or artisanal fishers or aquaculturists, communities of artisanal fishers or aquaculturists, and workers in different steps of the seafood value chain will be considered.

Stories should show the important role that these figures play in building a more sustainable seafood system. To help with this narrative, the initiative has identified 10 principles that define a more sustainable seafood system. These can be viewed on the initiative’s website and they state:
Seafood is sustainable when:

  • it helps address climate change
  • it supports global ecosystems
  • it optimizes impact on resources and nutrient cycles.
  • it promotes a safe growing environment for safe food sources.
  • it advances animal welfare.
  • it enhances flavor and nutrition.
  • it builds resilience and self-sufficiency in local communities.
  • it prioritizes inclusion, equality, and fair treatment of workers.
  • it preserves legality and the quality and the story of the product throughout the value chain.
  • it creates opportunities along the whole value chain.

Proposed stories should show one or more of these principles in practice.

Applications are open from the 28th of June to the 15th of August 2022. There will be 50 selected applicants who will be granted access to The Lexicon’s Total Storytelling Lab. These 50 applicants will be asked to accept and sign a learning agreement and acceptance of participation document with which they agree to respect The Lexicon’s code of conduct.

The first part of the lab will take place online between August the 22nd and August the 26th and focus on training participants on the foundation of storytelling, supporting them to create a production plan, and aligning all of them around a shared vision.

Based on their motivation, quality of the story, geography, and participation in the online Lab, a selected group of participants will be gifted a GoPro camera offered to the program by GoPro For A Change. Participants who are selected to receive the GoPro camera will need to sign an acceptance and usage agreement.

The second part of the Storytelling Lab will consist of a production period in which each participant will be supported in the production of their own story. This period goes from August 26th to October 13th. Each participant will have the opportunity to access special mentorship from an international network of storytellers and seafood experts who will help them build their story. The Lexicon also provides editors, animators, and graphic designers to support participants with more technical skills.

The final deadline to submit the stories is the 14th of October. Participants will be able to both submit complete edited stories, or footage accompanied by a storyboard to be assembled by The Lexicon’s team.

All applicants who will exhibit conduct and behavior that is contrary to The Lexicon’s code of conduct will be automatically disqualified. This includes applicants proposing stories that openly discriminate against a social or ethnic group, advocate for a political group, incite violence against any group, or incite to commit crimes of any kind.

All submissions must be the entrant’s original work. Submissions must not infringe upon the trademark, copyright, moral rights, intellectual rights, or rights of privacy of any entity or person.

Participants will retain the copyrights to their work while also granting access to The Lexicon and the other partners of the initiative to share their contributions as part of A Greener Blue Global Storytelling Initiative.

If a potential selected applicant cannot be reached by the team of the Initiative within three (3) working days, using the contact information provided at the time of entry, or if the communication is returned as undeliverable, that potential participant shall forfeit.

Offering

Selected applicants will be granted access to an advanced Storytelling Lab taught and facilitated by Douglas Gayeton, award-winning storyteller and information architect, co-founder of The Lexicon. In this course, participants will learn new techniques that will improve their storytelling skills and be able to better communicate their work with a global audience. This skill includes (but is not limited to) how to build a production plan for a documentary, how to find and interact with subjects, and how to shoot a short documentary.

Twenty of the participants will receive a GoPro Hero 11 Digital Video and Audio Cameras by September 15, 2022. Additional participants may receive GoPro Digital Video and Audio Cameras to be announced at a later date. The recipients will be selected by advisors to the program and will be based on selection criteria (see below) on proposals by Storytelling Lab participants. The selections will keep in accordance with Lab criteria concerning geography, active participation in the Storytelling Lab and commitment to the creation of a story for the Initiative, a GoPro Camera to use to complete the storytelling lab and document their story. These recipients will be asked to sign an acceptance letter with terms of use and condition to receive the camera. 

The Lexicon provides video editors, graphic designers, and animators to support the participants to complete their stories.

The submitted stories will be showcased during international and local events, starting from the closing event of the International Year of Fisheries and Aquaculture 2022 in Rome, in January 2023. The authors of the stories will be credited and may be invited to join.

All selection criteria

Storytelling lab participation:

Applicants that will be granted access to the storytelling Lab will be evaluated based on the entries they provided in the online form, and in particular:

  • The completeness of their form
  • The relevance of their story (coherence with the main goal of the initiative and 10 principles)
  • Written motivation explained
  • Geography (the initiative aims at showcasing stories from all over the world so the mix of locations will be a factor that the selection committee will take into account)
 

Applications will be evaluated by a team of 4 judges from The Lexicon, GSSI and the team of IYAFA (Selection committee).

When selecting applications, the call promoters may request additional documentation or interviews both for the purpose of verifying compliance with eligibility requirements and to facilitate proposal evaluation.

Camera recipients:

Participants to the Storytelling Lab who will be given a GoPro camera will be selected based on:

  • Quality of the story (coherence with the initiative and the 10 principles)
  • Motivation demonstrated during the interaction in the online class
  • Participation in the online class (participants that will attend less than 4 classes will be automatically excluded)
 

The evaluation will be carried out by a team of 4 judges from The Lexicon, GSSI and the team of IYAFA (Selection committee).

Incidental expenses and all other costs and expenses which are not specifically listed in these Official Rules but which may be associated with the acceptance, receipt and use of the Storytelling Lab and the camera are solely the responsibility of the respective participants and are not covered by The Lexicon or any of the A Greener Blue partners.

All participants who receive a Camera are required to sign an agreement allowing GoPro for a Cause, The Lexicon and GSSI to utilize the films for A Greener Blue and their promotional purposes. All participants will be required to an agreement to upload their footage into the shared drive of The Lexicon and make the stories, films and images available for The Lexicon and the promoting partners of A Greener Blue.

Additional Limitations

Selection and distribution of the camera is non-transferable. No substitution or cash equivalent of the cameras is granted. The Lexicon and its respective partners and representatives are not responsible for any typographical or other errors in the offer or administration of the Initiative, including, but not limited to, errors in any printing or posting or the Official Rules, the selection and announcement of any selected participant, or the distribution of any equipment. Any attempt to damage the content or operation of this Initiative is unlawful and subject to possible legal action by The Lexicon. The Lexicon reserves the right to terminate, suspend or amend the Initiative, without notice, and for any reason, including, without limitation, if The Lexicon determines that the Lab cannot be conducted as planned or should a virus, bug, tampering or unauthorized intervention, technical failure or other cause beyond The Lexicon’s control corrupt the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper play of the Contest. In the event any tampering or unauthorized intervention may have occurred, The Lexicon reserves the right to void suspect entries at issue.
